Map the flow before solving the problem
Supply-chain problems rarely sit in one department. Start by tracing materials, information, money, capacity, and decisions across the network.
- Identify suppliers, facilities, customers, and critical handoffs.
- Separate physical flow from information flow.
- Look for bottlenecks, dependencies, and single points of failure.
- Ask what metric each actor is optimizing.
Look for tradeoffs—not perfect answers
Lower cost, faster service, more inventory, greater resilience, and higher flexibility can conflict. Strong analysis makes the tradeoffs explicit.
- Compare total cost rather than unit price alone.
- Consider service, quality, capacity, lead time, and risk together.
- Distinguish efficiency from resilience.
- Explain who bears the cost or risk of each option.
Analyze disruption in layers
When disruption occurs, separate the trigger from the mechanisms that spread its effects through the network.
- What resource or capability became unavailable?
- Which nodes or partners depended on it?
- What alternatives existed, and how quickly could they activate?
- What information was needed to coordinate the response?
Build supply-chain career fluency
Employers value students who understand both the concepts and the language of the field.
- Learn common logistics and procurement terminology.
- Follow major industry developments.
- Practice explaining a supply-chain problem in plain language.
- Connect classroom projects to measurable business outcomes.
